The Upper School - Class 9 – 12

From the age of 14 the young people are developing powers of independent judgement, awakening new faculties of thinking, and discovering new found freedom and self-awareness. Our curriculum and style of education aims to help the teenagers through this part of their school life while their personalities are being formed, their abilities tested, and aptitudes discovered.

Instead of one class teacher for the main lesson, the students now have a range of specialist subject teachers. Main lessons continue so the young people discover the creative possibilities in each subject area as it is gone through in depth every day for 3 to 4 weeks. Other lessons in the day are English, Mathematics and Science, various crafts, art, drama and music, foreign languages, movement and games.

Interest in the world from many different view points is our guiding theme, fostering artistic, social and scientific appreciation. Alongside this interest in the world we aim to develop more rigorous thinking capacities through reflection, comparison, analysis, reason and debate. In addition confidence and practical skills come from the ongoing work in music, drama, movement and craft lessons. Social confidence is maintained because the pupils share so many of the lessons with their class.

Examination choices and smaller group sizes begin to take place as the pupils move through the school. Please look at the detailed prospectus for information about our examination program. Co-operation between the four upper school classes takes place through assemblies, festivals, outings and performances, so the social and cultural life for the young people at school is stimulating and diverse. This is as important for many of the pupils as the gaining of qualifications which begins in Class 10.
