Middle School
Class V -VIII
(ages 11 - 14)
As pupils progress through the Middle School, the class teacher continues with the Main Lesson and specialist teachers teach lessons in French, German, music, Eurythmy (creative movement), woodwork, pottery, handwork, religious studies, games and gym. Each child learns to play an instrument and we form class and school orchestras.
Occasional homework is set for Class V and more regular for Class VI. Homework is set on daily basis for Classes VII and VIII.
Literacy and numeracy are incorporated daily into the Main Lessons. Teachers cultivate and encourage creativity in writing as well as good grammar. The spoken language is cultivated by the performance of a class play every year. Other Main Lesson themes for the older pupils include botany, geology, physics and economics.

Learning continues to be related to development. For example, as pupils begin to experience the turmoil of adolescence, this internal revolution is mirrored with the study of the British Industrial and French Revolutions, thus building an awareness of the part conflict plays in development and the need to find balance.
At the end of Class VIII, the pupils' journey with their class teacher is complete and they stand ready and equipped with the learning tools required to meet the challenges of the Upper School. The children are eager to go forward and learn.
